NYPD stormtroopers to patrol subways

DHS and the NYPD have collaborated to bring us another taxpayer funded PR stunt. At a cost of $30 million dollars for the next two years, ‘Operation Torch’ will put heavily armed officers in the subways in a mostly futile effort to prevent terrorist attacks.
I’m with them in-so-far as there is a terrorist threat [...]

House holds hearing on/in Second Life

The House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held a hearing Thursday on virtual worlds which was simulcast in Second Life. There were all sorts of ridiculous questions posed, particularly those that focused on how Second Life was policing its site from terrorists. Despite their apparent ignorance on the subject, several committee members took the [...]

US troop deaths in Pakistan?

Passport posted today on NATO troop commitments in Afghanistan by the numbers. Instead of listing the exact troop numbers, they used a ratio of the members’ population between 20-39/troops. Included in this was the death count:

Britain — 0.0056 (includes Ministry of [...]

In New York City, as many as 100 police officers in squad cars from every precinct converge twice daily at randomly selected times and at randomly selected sites, like [...]

TSA’s blog

If haven’t been to TSA’s new blog, I suggest you check it out. EVOLUTION OF SECURITY essentially consists of TSA personnel huddling in their Alamo while under siege by a mob of haters. It’s gotten so hostile that TSA now moderates comments, which, of course, has only played into dissenters hands. “Stasi-lite” and “though [...]

Are We Rome?

The following is a timely passage from the book Are We Rome? by Cullen Murphy.

In 68 B.C. a pirate attack on Rome’s port of Ostia prompted the terrified Romans to cede far-reaching powers to one man, Pompey. There would be no turning back. The need to act boldly and react quickly; to ferret out enemy [...]
