What Does Blinking Tells us About Huckabee?

Mike Huckabee’s response to a question of whether or not he supports wife submission appears to be answered smoothly. I’m struck by his body language though, particularly his blinking. If you just look at his eyes while he answers, you’ll see what I’m talking about. He blinks an inordinate amount of times.

I consulted an article on wikiHow titled “How to Detect Lies.” It provides 12 ways to determine whether or not someone is lying. Here’s number 5:

Notice the person’s eye movements. Contrary to popular belief, a liar does not always avoid eye contact. Humans naturally break eye contact and look upwards when remembering something. Liars may deliberately make eye contact to seem more sincere. Liars also tend to blink more often. A typical right-handed person tends to look towards his left (your right) when remembering something that actually happened (remembered images, sounds and internal dialogue) and towards their right or downwards (constructed images, sounds and kinesthetic sensations) when they’re making something up.

I can’t conclusively say he is lying in this exchange. Personally, I find it hard to believe that someone who signed a petition supporting wife submission in 1998–which subsequently ran in the NYT–could have a reversal of opinion in ten years time. He’s a crafty politician though, so whether or not he still holds that opinion is moot. It’s his capability to spin it that matters.

There’s definitely more to Mike Huckabee than meets the eye. Might I suggest looking in his?
