How much? [updated]

The Department of Defense quietly published this press release at 5pm EST yesterday. In it we learn that the DoD’s Wal Mart, the Defense Logistics Agency, will spend $130 million on oil alone in 2008:

Shell Chemical Yabucoa, Inc., Yabucoa, Puerto Rico is being awarded a maximum $129,917,372 fixed price with economic price adjustment, partial set aside, indefinite delivery and indefinite quantity contract for fuel.

DANGER ROOM points out that Sen Obama has used earmarks to research ways to slash military fuel spending:

Obama also landed $1 million for the Illinois Institute of Technology to develop a cost-effective conversion kit to retrofit Army Humvees with electric hybrid systems. It’s a trick the military has been trying to pull off for years — a hybrid can run whisper-quiet, and without gorging itself of fuel. But the generals have never seemed able to get themselves the battlefield equivalent of a Prius.

Speaking of alternative energy, Obama got another $1 million for a Chicago State University project to equip drones with fuel cells. That would let the pilotless planes run for much, much longer than the current, gas- or battery-powered models.

Update: Turns out the DoD is shelling out $130 million for average fuel only [not aviation, not naval.] Naval distillate fuel is an extra $185 million. I’ll keep checking to see how much aviation fuel is going to run us this year…
