Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan?
NYT is reporting that the Bush Administration is debating exporting the wild successes of its missions in Afghanistan and Iraq to Pakistan:
WASHINGTON — President Bush’s senior national security advisers are debating whether to expand the authority of the Central Intelligence Agency and the military to conduct far more aggressive covert operations in the tribal areas of Pakistan.
The debate is a response to intelligence reports that Al Qaeda and the Taliban are intensifying efforts there to destabilize the Pakistani government, several senior administration officials said.
How obtuse is the Bush Administration? Their reasoning couldn’t be more flawed: ‘Al Qaeda is attempting to destabilize the Pakistani government, the only panacea for this situation is a foreign army.’ Yeah, invading foreign armies historically have been purveyors of stability…
